Traditionally, one of the many duties of the mother of the bride is – of course – to assist with the Shopping. This goes for ALL shopping, from being helpful, honest and supportive during the wedding gown search, to scouting out vendors and finding the perfect wedding reception location. Chances are your mom is the perfect resource for a lot of your planning needs. She most likely has gone through her own wedding planning process, has been to countless weddings, knows the area (if you’re staying local) and has a good idea of where to get the best deals with the highest quality!
Moms are also your go-to to learn about your Family Traditions. You may want to know if there are any religious or ethnic traditions you’d like to incorporate into your big day? She will also help you with finding something old, borrowed and blue – typically incorporating the tradition of passing down a family heirloom. This is a very symbolic and beautiful gesture, representing family, history, tradition, love, and the cycle of life. Which, one day, you will pass along to your child!
If you’re like us, your mom is the center of your family tree, your main Contact Person – she knows everyone’s business and how to get a hold of them! She is someone you can rely on to get you addresses and phone numbers for your master guest list. Also, she can be trusted enough to have your vendors call her to answer questions regarding your flower arrangements, choice cake flavor, etc. Set your mom up with a list of your wedding specifics and let her field all the questions you haven’t got the time for, she’s sure to do an amazing job – after all she’s your mom!
As if planning a wedding wasn’t time consuming enough, now there’s a bridal shower and rehearsal dinner to think about?? Don’t fret; your Bridal Shower and Rehearsal Dinner are the two perfect events the mother of the bride can easily handle! She knows what you like, your wedding theme, colors, and what kind of food you and your family enjoy the most – leave these tasks up to your mom and bridal party to coordinate, you’ve got enough on your plate!
Lastly, this may be our favorite mother of the bride duty, Day-of Dressing Assistant! This also can fall under the traditions category, but we thought it was too special to not have its own section. Mothers have been helping their daughters dress for their weddings for centuries; it is an intimate time in both of your lives, and another milestone you two have gone through. I’m sure as mom is helping you dress she is reminiscing about dressing you as a small child, about watching you grow into a woman, and now looking at you in that beautiful dress on your wedding day – she must be beaming with pride and joy! Not only that, she has been your most significant helper during your planning process, now you both can see all your hard work come together! This is a precious moment that should be cherished and well documented; tell your photographer and videographer to keep the cameras going during your getting-ready session!
